Sometimes you need a chainsaw, and sometimes you need a scalpel. No matter what project you’re working on, success often depends on having the right tool for the job. That’s why GameSpy Technology is pleased to unveil its new “FieldKit” line of products for developers creating games in the Unity engine.
FieldKit is all about tailoring our tools for building great online gaming features to the specific needs of Unity developers. Each product …
- Focuses on a tightly defined area of functionality
- Is available for purchase from within the Unity Asset store
- Integrates directly into the Unity IDE
- Takes only minutes for developers to install and configure
- Comes accompanied by a “full project” (usually a demo in Unity’s free AngryBots game) to provide a “picture of success”
- Comes priced to suit the budgets of independent developers
Our first release in this line is ReadyMatch, which provides developers with instant, automatch-style multiplayer matchmaking for their Unity games. Our goal was to create the fastest, easiest way to add multiplayer matchmaking to Unity games on – or across – any platform.
Using ReadyMatch, you can drop your players instantly into open matches, connecting up to N players to a designated host. Additionally, GameSpy Technology provides all of the backend hosting for the matchmaking infrastructure. Unlike other online tools available in the the Asset Store, GameSpy Technology hosts the matchmaking servers for its ReadyMatch developers; there’s no need to host the code in your data center, incurring “hidden” ongoing costs.
Adding it to multiplayer games is a breeze. Because we integrated it into the Unity IDE, you can pretty much just drop it in and go. Configuration takes just a few steps; set “min” and “max” players along with timeout length, add a simple “Play Now!” or “AutoMatch” button to your UI to help players kick off the matchmaking process, and you’re pretty much done.
We’ve even included a tutorial video to help make integration even easier:
Ready to get started making some amazing Unity multiplayer games? Get to it! And be sure to let us know how we can make the product better — or what future “FieldKit” products you’d like to see from us, either in the GameSpy Technology developer forums (available to anyone with a free developer account), or in the Unity community forums.
