We'll let the video game historians argue that one but as far as we're concerened it doesn't really matter anymore. There's a new king on the throne and its name is Tetris DS.

True, the game play hasn't changed much - but that's why it succeeds. You shouldn't mess with success. Tetris DS, though, brings an amazing innovation to the venerable franchise: online play. But don't take our word for it. The fine folks at IGN had this to say:

Like all Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection titles, Tetris DS uses GameSpy's Connect and Community services to help gamers find opponents and build buddy lists. But Tetris DS took the extra step of incorporating our Competition tools to build a robust ranking system, complete with ELO-like ratings. The rating info is fed back into the matchmaking process so that you'll always be matched against an opponent of a similar skill level.
