Unreal Tournament III (PS3)

Automatic reporting to web-based Arena ladders.
What happens when you take the great deathmatch chocolate and dip it in some luscious online services peanut butter? Unreal Tournament III happens, my friends. Epic Games turned to GameSpy to help bring the third installment of the vaunted franchise online and we did it, together, in style.
Multiple Platforms? No Problem!
Unreal Tournament III was to be a first for the franchise: simultaneous release on both PC and console. Throw in the Mac and Linux clients and the goal was to hit four platforms with as little repeated work as possible. We were happy to help Epic meet their goals. We've been offering a single, simple API for years to keep the developer's efforts when doing multiplatform development to a minimum.
By making heavy use of our PlayStation Network compatability, Epic was able to use our single API to manage buddy lists, help users find matches and track thousands of stats. (More on stats later...) Unreal Tournament III was also the first title to make use of GameSpy's SPU-optimized Voice SDK on the PlayStation 3.
Tracking The Body Count
Anyone who has played Unreal Tournament knows that there's nothing quite like taunting your opponents when you're dominating. Why let that feeling be fleeting?
By making use of our ATLAS Competition System Epic was able to track, literally, thousands of data points about each player and put them into a variety of leaderboards. Now when you're done boasting of your online conquests you can point your buddies to the handy leaderboard and show them who is best.
We took it one step further and pushed those results out onto the web. Any time a user plays a one-on-one Duel match the outcome is automatically tracked in game and also displayed on the UT3: Official Duel Ladder on GameSpy Arena.
Now Let's Do It Again
Epic loved what we'd done together so much they thought, "Why not make this available to all of our licensees?" We thought it was a great idea, too.
Developing using the Unreal Engine? Then take a gander at our Unreal Engine Integration offering and see what we can do for you, too.
We love to talk about making games larger than life. Send us a note.
